Baptism

Mat 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

Mark 16:16 He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved;
LET’S STUDY THE SUBJECT OF BAPTISM FROM THE BIBLES POINT OF VIEW

JESUS IS LORD

The overwhelming centerpiece of salvation throughout scripture has always been the Lordship of Jesus. When Jesus is Lord there is no question about baptism, He commanded it so we obey Him.

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ– this Jesus whom you crucified.

Luke 6:46 And why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

Heb. 5:9 “And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,

Gal. 3:26,27 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

JESUS COMMANDED IT

Every follower of Jesus is to be baptized – it’s part of our obedience.

Matt. 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

TO FOLLOW JESUS’ EXAMPLE

Jesus set an example for us to follow.

Mark 1:9 And it came about in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

THE BIBLE SAYS IT’S ESSENTIAL

Baptism is never referred to as optional in the Bible. It is always referred to as essential, imperative, and absolutely necessary.

Mark 16:16 He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

1 Pet. 3:21 And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you– not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience– through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

SINS FORGIVEN

In Baptism your sins are washed away and forgiven.

Acts 22:16 And now why do you delay? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’

HOLY SPIRIT

The gift of the Holy Spirit is given at baptism.

Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

MEMBERSHIP IN HIS BODY

At baptism we become part of the body of Christ which is the church. To be a member of the Church one must be baptized.

1 Cor 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Eph 1:22,23 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fulness of Him who fills all in all.

Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

TO BE BORN AGAIN

Jesus said we must be born of water and the Spirit. Water mentioned in John 3:5 is agreed by most as referring to baptism. So being born again includes baptism.

John 3:3-5 Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he? Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Titus 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

TO OBEY THE GOSPEL

The Gospel is the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Christ. We obey the Gospel in baptism when we die to our sins, are buried in the watery grave of baptism, and then rise to walk a new life.

1 Cor. 15:1-4 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

Rom. 6:3,4 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
