The Bible does not attempt to prove the existence of God. It assumes it and declares:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis.1:1 (NIV)

Psalms 14:1 says: The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

Our knowledge of God is available from three sources –

  1. His Creation

Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Psa 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

From creation we can know that God must be intelligent, for there is great intelligence demonstrated in the design of the world, He must be powerful for we see His power demonstrated throughout the universe, but we can not tell if He is a loving God or a holy God. We also cannot tell from nature if there is one God or many different Gods.

  1. His Word

We must go to God’s word, as revealed in the Bible, to learn His moral character. From His word we learn that there is one God expressed in three personalities.

Duet. 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD (KJV)

Gen 1:26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; (Emphasis added)
John 6:27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Mat 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Emphasis added)

  1. His Son

The best description is a picture. No one has seen God, but He has given us a picture of Himself, Jesus said

John 14:9-11 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

WHAT IS GOD LIKE? An accurate view of God is essential for success in any area of life. A small view of God limits His ability to work in our lives. An inaccurate view of God is little more than idolatry. From God’s word and through the life of Christ, and what we see in creation we can have an accurate knowledge of God’s greatness and goodness. Look at the next two pages to see what an awesome God we have.

The Greatness of God
INFINITE God has no limitations. His only bounds are of His own choosing Job 11:7-9 “Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens–what can you do? They are deeper than the depths of the grave –what can you know? Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.
ETERNAL God is limitless in reference to time. He always has been and always will be. He exists outside of the realm of space and time. Psa 90:2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Psa 102:27 But you remain the same, and your years will never end.

Dan 6:26-27 “For he is the living God and he endures forever; his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end. He rescues and he saves; he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth.

OMNIPRESENT God is limitless in reference to space. He is everywhere present at the same time. Prov 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.

Acts 17:26-27 From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

OMNIPOTENT God is limitless in reference to energy, strength, and power Jer 32:17 “Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

Psa 115:3 Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases Him

OMNISCIENT God is limitless in reference to knowledge. God knows everything past, present and future. Psa 147:5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

INCOMPREHENSIBLE God is beyond the grasp of our limited understanding. Rom 11:33-36 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.

Isa 55:8-9 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

IMMUTABLE Because He is infinitely perfect, God does not change. Mal 3:6 “For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever.

SOVEREIGN God is the absolute, ultimate, and sole ruler of the universe. Deu 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.

HOLY God is absolutely separate from any and all sin. 1 Pet 1:14-16 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

Rev 4:8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, holy, holy is t
