Holy Spirit

THE HOLY SPIRIT

Gal. 5:16-18 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS DIVINE

In the Bible the Holy Spirit is given divine names and does the work that only God can do.

NAMES MY SPIRIT Gen 6:3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
SPIRIT OF GOD Rom 8:14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
SPIRIT OF THE LORD 2 Cor 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
SPIRIT OF CHRIST Rom 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
WORKS CREATION Gen 1:1,2 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

Job 33:4 “The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

INSPIRATION Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
MIRACLES 1 Cor 2:4 And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
REGENERATION Titus 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
RESURRECTION Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON
HE HAS A MIND Rom 8:27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
HE TEACHES John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
HE GUIDES

AND HEARS

John 16:13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
HE SPEAKS Acts 8:29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot.”
HE HAS

A WILL

1 Cor 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

Acts 16:6-7 And they passed through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia; and when they had come to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them;

THE HOLY SPIRIT LIVES IN THE CHRISTIAN
THE HOLY SPIRIT LIVES IN YOU! Luke 11:13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” The Holy Spirit lives in the Christian. This is one of the greatest truths in the New Testament. The Holy Spirits presence in your life is an essential part of being a Christian, in fact we read if the Spirit is not in your life you do not belong to Christ.
Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.
1 Cor 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
2 Cor 1:21,22 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.
Gal 4:6,7 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
Rom 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

WHEN DOES ONE RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT?
ONE RECEIVES THE INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AT BAPTISM. Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This passage states very clearly that we receive the Holy Spirit when we are baptized.
John 16:7-8 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment; The Holy Spirit convicts a person before becoming a Christian but only indwells them after becoming a Christian.
Acts 19:1-5 And it came about that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found some disciples, and he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus. And when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Notice in this scripture that when Paul asked these disciples if they had the Holy Spirit, and they responded, No, that he asked them about their Baptism. This make logical sense only if baptism is where a person receives the Holy Spirit.
John 3:3-8 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he? Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again. “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Here Jesus connects the new birth with water and the Holy Spirit. When a person is baptized in water they receive the Holy Spirit, and as such the scriptures calls this the New Birth.

HOW CAN THE HOLY SPIRIT HELP ME
HELPS IN OVERCOMING SIN Rom 8:12,13 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh– for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. It is the Holy Spirit that helps us to be holy and overcome sin. We can not conquer sin on our own strength. It can only be done through the Holy Spirit.
HELPS IN PRAYER Rom 8:26 And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; It is the Holy Spirit that makes our prayers effective. On our own we do not have the ability to connect with God.
SEALS THE CHRISTIAN Eph 1:13, 14 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation– having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory. God gave us the a “seal” to identify us a Christians and that “seal” is the Holy Spirit. If the Spirit is in us God knows we belong to Him.
HELPS GIVE US CONFIDENCE Rom 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, The Holy Spirit gives us the confidence that we are saved.
BY GIVING ME THE FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Gal 5:22,23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. The Holy Spirit in a person’s life will produce fruit.
love joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness self- control

QUENCHING THE HOLY SPIRIT

1 Thess. 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit;

HE CAN BE LIED TO Acts 5:3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back some of the price of the land?
HE CAN BE TESTED Acts 5:9 Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they shall carry you out as well.”
HE CAN BE RESISTED Acts 7:51 “You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.
HE CAN BE GRIEVED Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
HE CAN BE INSULTED Heb 10:29 How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?
HE CAN BE BLASPHEMED Mat 12:31 “Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.

HOW CAN YOU BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Eph 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,

Acts 6:3 “But select from among you, brethren, seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit

and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.

Acts 13:52 And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

2 Cor 3:12-16 Having therefore such a hope, we use great boldness in our speech, and are not as Moses, who used to put a veil over his face that the sons of Israel might not look intently at the end of what was fading away. But their minds were hardened; for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains unlifted, because it is removed in Christ. But to this day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their heart; but whenever a man turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

2 Cor 3:17-18 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

GOD’S GLORY

Bible Study Rom 8:5-6 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does.
